Southern Straits 2013

Mar 29, 2013, way to early in the morning. About to climb aboard Tarka for the 2013 Southern Straits Race. The crew; Alan, Hank (Tarka's owner), Ian and Jason. Stowing gear. Last minute checkout. Examining the rig. You know, we need the bigger sail.
To remove the #2. 100 3409 And we're off. The adventure begins. Ian and Hank chatting just outside Horseshoe Bay. Jason and Ian approaching Ambleside Park in West Van.
Jason about as contented as a man can be. A crowd begins to form. The crowd is still forming. Yup, it's crowded. Really crowded. Approaching Entrance Island just before sunset. (Gabriola Island behind it)
Morning, and Alan checks out position. LONG cool night. At the helm for 20 hours now. Time for a break. Off Bowen Island, completely becalmed. Nope, haven't moved since I left for a snooze. Hank's new spinnaker. Takes teamwork to fly this sail.
Leaving the safety inspection at West Van Yacht Club (Thunderbird Marina) for home. The route. We took a very southerly route to Entrance Island, compared to most of the other boats. We got the wind, they got the current and we all arrived at the same time. Home 24 hours and 45 minutes after we left.
